More Measures

Foreclosures
In Minnesota, scheduled foreclosure sales recorded by the county sheriff's office are commonly used as proxy measure of actual loss of ownership. HousingLink provides Sheriff Sales summary data for the 7-county Twin Cities metro area for 2005, 2006 and 2007.

Housing segregation
"Exposure index," measures the average racial composition of neighborhoods experienced by members of specific racial groups; "Dissimilarity index" measures to what degree a particular group is distributed across census tracts in relation to another group. Census Scope provides a tool to calculate exposure and dissimilarity indexes by major cities and metropolitan statistical areas (MSA) using 2000 census data.

Housing wage gap
The housing wage gap is the difference between the median wage and the wage required to afford a median-priced home or apartment. Data available from Minnesota Housing Partnership, 2001 through 2006. See "Income Gap" charts.

Median gross rent
Median gross rent data (includes rent plus utilities) for the 13-county metropolitan area, provided by the American Community Survey (ACS). Data available for 1990 to 2006.

Median home price
Median home price data for the Twin Cities 13-county metropolitan area, provided by the National Association of Home Builders. Data available for 1995 to 2007.

Use tools to construct a measure:

Cost of development
Estimate housing development costs using list prices of raw materials or a construction-cost calculator.

Housing construction statistics
Up-to-date housing construction statistics, including new housing starts and building permits. National, state and local data are available.

Mortgage lending and borrowing
Generate local statistics from data reported annually to the federal government. Type in a place of interest and then select the "Mortgage Lending" tab under topics. 2005 data for the state of Minnesota, the Twin Cities 13-county metropolitan area and Minnesota cities are available.

Subsidized housing units
Search for existing and planned rental housing units in the 7-county region that are tied to funding sources requiring affordable rents.
